Shanghai publishes foreign-graduate Category C work-permit route

Shanghai publishes a quota-based Category C work-permit route for specified recent foreign graduates, including graduates of Shanghai institutions working in designated zones or listed occupations and certain outstanding graduates from Chinese or high-level overseas universities. Applicants still need an employer and work permit; there is no national one-year post-study residence permit matching the former record.

Unilateral 30-day visa-free programme extends through 2026

China extended its unilateral visa-free programme for more than 40 countries through 31 December 2026. Canada and the United Kingdom joined from 17 February 2026. Eligible ordinary-passport holders may stay for up to 30 days for business, tourism, family or friend visits, exchange and transit; the programme does not authorise work or long-term residence.

Revised CIPS rules take effect

The People's Bank of China revised the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System rules, effective 1 February 2026, covering participant accounts, settlement funds, liquidity, queues, cancellations and returns. This is payment-system infrastructure; the former entry's claim that expansion directly eased expatriate salary remittance under a universal USD50,000 cap was not supported by the cited source.

240-hour transit entry network expands to 65 ports

Five ports—Guangzhou Pazhou Ferry Terminal, Hengqin, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Zhongshan passenger port and West Kowloon Station—joined the 240-hour visa-free transit entry network on 5 November 2025, bringing the total to 65 ports. The measure does not create unrestricted entry from every border point.

K visa launches for young science and technology talent

China added the K visa to its ordinary visa categories from 1 October 2025. Eligible young science and technology professionals can apply without a domestic employer or entity invitation and may undertake qualifying exchanges and relevant entrepreneurial or business activities. The K visa is not itself a work permit.

Indonesia joins the 240-hour visa-free transit list

From 12 June 2025, Indonesian nationals became eligible for China's 240-hour visa-free transit policy, increasing the eligible-country list to 55. They must still meet the policy's transit, document, onward-travel, port and permitted-area conditions.
