Talent medical and pharmacy profession route becomes operational

Decree 2025-539 implemented the Talent medical and pharmacy profession residence route in June 2025. It is for eligible third-country health professionals authorised to practise in France and requires remuneration at least equal to the second step of the practitioner-associate scale. It is not a general four-year permit available solely because an applicant holds an overseas medical diploma.

Student long-stay visa resource floor rises to EUR877.50 per month

France-Visas says student long-stay visa files submitted from 1 August 2026 must show resources of at least EUR877.50 per month. The new figure applies by filing date and replaces the lower amount shown in older guidance. Rent controls continue in Paris and other designated municipalities

Rent control applies in Paris and other specifically designated areas, with rules differing between first lettings, re-lettings and renewals and with reference-rent limits in covered municipalities. It is not a nationwide cap and should not be confused with the expired rent-review-index shield. Users must check the current official list and the local reference rent for the property.

Impatriate income-tax regime remains available for up to eight calendar years

The Article 155 B impatriate regime can exempt qualifying impatriation remuneration and portions of specified foreign-source income, subject to eligibility and option rules. It applies until 31 December of the eighth calendar year following the year the person takes up the French post. There is no general rule limiting the regime to people arriving by 2030, and the often-cited 30% amount is a deemed impatriation-premium option rather than an automatic exemption of every salary.

Who it affects: Qualifying employees and company officers recruited abroad who become French tax resident.

Naturalisation now requires B2 French and a civic examination

The nationality-access rules effective from 1 January 2026 raise the French-language standard for naturalisation and reintegration to B2 and require success in the civic examination. The examination covers the Republic, rights and duties, French history and geography, culture and life in French society. Exemptions and the precise evidence accepted remain governed by the nationality rules.

First multi-year and resident cards gain language and civic-exam tests

From 1 January 2026, most applicants for a first multi-year residence card must demonstrate A2 French and pass the civic examination. A first resident card generally requires B1 French and the civic examination. These are separate tests with statutory category and personal exemptions, so they should not be described as applying uniformly to every permit or renewal.

Talent salary reference is set at EUR39,582

An order effective 1 September 2025 set the annual gross reference salary used by specified Talent routes at EUR39,582. The amount is a reference, not the qualified-employee threshold itself: the current official route page states EUR43,243 gross annually for that route and EUR59,373 for the EU Blue Card. Route pages and the underlying law control the applicable threshold and other conditions.

Who it affects: Talent-qualified-employee and EU Blue Card applicants, whose statutory multipliers produce higher route thresholds.
