Naturalisation uses the five-in-nine reckonable-residence test
In force
Citizenship
Most adult residence-based applicants need five years of reckonable residence in the previous nine, including one continuous year immediately before application. The final year generally allows up to 70 days outside Ireland, with up to 30 more at ministerial discretion in exceptional circumstances. Permission gaps and non-reckonable stamps can affect eligibility; international-protection applicants submitting from 8 December 2025 generally also use five years.
