Ireland added six roles to its Critical Skills list in 2026

What the evidence shows

Ireland’s 2026 employment-permit review added six role groups to the Critical Skills Occupations List: agronomists, construction planners or schedulers, community eye-care roles, intellectual-property professionals, geospatial surveyors, and riggers within the games industry. The current official list is effective from 13 May 2026 and uses detailed occupation codes and specialism conditions.

Why it matters

A role newly placed on the Critical Skills list can use a more favourable permit path than an ordinary General Employment Permit, but the job title alone is not enough. The actual duties, occupation code, qualification, salary and contract must match the published criteria.

What this does not prove

• The official list uses occupation codes and, for some categories, named specialisms; a similar job title may not qualify.
• Critical Skills eligibility also depends on remuneration, qualifications and a qualifying two-year job offer.
• The standard €40,904 (approx. £34,961) floor is not the only remuneration rule; recent graduates, public-sector roles and higher-salary occupations have separate treatment.
• An employer and role must meet the employment-permit rules even when the occupation appears on the list.
• Applicants should use the live occupation list rather than relying on the announcement summary alone.
