What the evidence shows

All New Zealand visitor visas applied for on or after 27 January 2025 allow remote work for an overseas employer or client, with no immigration limit on the amount of qualifying remote work. The work cannot be for a New Zealand employer, provide goods or services to a New Zealand business or person for gain, or require physical presence at a New Zealand workplace. Remote work alone is not a lawful purpose for the visit, so the traveller must still meet the visitor route’s genuine-purpose conditions.

Usefulness

Why it matters

New Zealand does not require a separate digital-nomad visa for this narrow form of overseas remote work. The permission is broader than many travellers realise, while the local-work and tax boundaries remain important.

Limits

What this does not prove

  • The permission applies to visitor visas applied for on or after 27 January 2025 and to qualifying NZeTA visitors.
  • Remote work must be for an overseas employer or client and cannot involve supplying goods or services to New Zealand businesses or people for gain.
  • Remote work by itself is not a lawful purpose for visiting; the traveller must still satisfy the visitor route and genuine-intentions requirements.
  • There is no immigration hours cap, but the permitted length of stay still comes from the visitor permission.
  • New Zealand tax may apply. The general 92-day exemption and treaty-based 183-day possibilities depend on detailed conditions and individual circumstances.
