Citizenship reform permits multiple nationality and sets five-year rule

The nationality-law reform effective 27 June 2024 generally permits applicants to retain an existing nationality and reduced the ordinary qualifying residence period from eight years to five. It also reduced the qualifying residence period for citizenship acquired at birth by a child born in Germany to a foreign parent. Naturalisation remains conditional on the other statutory requirements; the separate three-year exceptional route introduced in 2024 was later abolished.
