Applicants do not need a local job offer, but must meet the prerequisites and prevailing passing threshold; meeting the threshold does not guarantee selection. Successful General Points Test applicants normally receive a 36-month initial stay.

Category A requires annual income of at least HK$2.5 million in the preceding year and normally grants 36 months. The General Employment Policy and the parallel Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals remain employer-sponsored routes for skills, knowledge or experience needed in Hong Kong. Current guidance normally grants 36 months or the employment-contract period if shorter, followed by a 3+2 extension pattern. Pay must be broadly commensurate with the prevailing market level.

Technical Professionals Stream opens specified skilled-trade admissions

A Technical Professionals Stream under GEP and ASMTP allows quota-limited applications for specified trades facing acute shortages. The New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme continues to require HK$30 million of net assets and HK$30 million of investment under the scheme. A non-Chinese national may qualify for Hong Kong permanent resident status after ordinarily residing in Hong Kong continuously for at least seven years and taking Hong Kong as the place of permanent residence, subject to the legal eligibility and evidence rules.
