One-year residence requirement applies to applicants from Portuguese-speaking countries

Article 12 of Brazil's Constitution provides that applicants originating from Portuguese-speaking countries need one uninterrupted year of residence and moral suitability for ordinary naturalisation. The current Ministry of Justice process also requires residence for an indefinite period, supporting documents and satisfaction of the applicable naturalisation requirements. This is a longstanding constitutional rule, not a 2024 reform and not a blanket guarantee of citizenship.
